• R&D Java Strategist, SAS Institute Inc. Cary, NC, 2001-present Coordinate Java development across R&D divisions. API design and system integration; oversight of development standards, policies, practices, tools and training; tracking use of Java technologies. Design and implementation of extensive Java@SAS intranet web site.
• Principal Systems Developer, SAS Institute Inc. Cary, NC, 1996-2001. Distributed mid tier service architecture for enterprise business information delivery. Architect and Java component framework design for webAF, an integrated development environment for building multi-tier client server Web enabled Java applications accessing SAS servers. Designed and implemented core 100% pure Java libraries, including collection and utility classes, internationalization, robust Java Beans deserialization. Developed object oriented testing techniques and Java testing framework. Lead Institute class hierarchy review committee. Initiated and lead software inspections in development group. Special concentration in Java language issues. Institute representative with JavaSoft on language evolution and API specifications.
• Senior Systems Developer, SAS Institute Inc. 1994-1996. Ongoing development of new features for SAS/AF, including a meta object protocol (MOP) for dynamic creation and modification of classes at run time, adding novel object system semantics including per-instance methods, and incorporating Model/View pattern into product class hierarchy. Participated in Institute wide design review boards.
• Project Manager, SAS Institute Inc. 1990-1993. Project manager and one of three lead developers of SAS/AF Frame Entry, an interactive object oriented application development environment for the SAS System. Principal designer and implementor of Object Oriented programming extensions to SAS Screen Control Language, including support library functions, integration with interpreter, and base classes.
• Systems Developer, SAS Institute Inc. 1989-1990. Principal designer and implementor of programming language byte code instruction set, interpreter, spreadsheet/matrix operations and run time system for SAS/CALC three dimensional spreadsheet system.
• Software Engineer, Data General, Research Triangle Park, NC. 6/88-5/89 Developed an object oriented widget set as part of an X Window System user interface toolkit based on Andrew.
• Computer Scientist, Software Technology Program, General Electric Corporate Research and Development, Schenectady, NY. 6/85-6/88. Member of a three year, project oriented software engineering training program, featuring three one-year software projects, pursuit of a Master's degree, and extensive internal education.
• Interactive System Designer's Workbench ( 1988) Developed an Ada to C source code translator for a subset of Ada. Used automatic parser generator. Developed C run time library for Ada feature emulation.
• Parallel Image Processing ( 1987) Development of a parallel processing environment based on a workstation software system for interactive image processing. Designed graphical parallel programming paradigm and parallel programming data-flow language and mapping between the two. Specified the user interface, including graphic operations and command set. Worked with team providing array processor software. Designed software interface between host and array processor.
• Omega Lisp Language Development ( 1986) Development of Omega Lisp, a high level language and programming environment for the Cross-Omega Connection Machine, a novel massively parallel connectionist architecture. Designed the language and implemented an interpreter/translator. Designed and specified the machine instruction set and helped design a high level software functional simulator. Implemented Omega Lisp and integrated it with the delivery system, a Symbolics Lisp Machine. Participated in hardware system design; helped develop proprietary algorithms for connectionist architectures, and filed one algorithm patent application.
• Computer Science Co-Op, IBM, Raleigh, NC (January-August, 1984) Lead a small team in the development of a customer survey data acquisition system. Designed and wrote data entry and batch processing programs. Learned basics of SAS Software and QBE, a relational database system.
• Computer Science Co-Op, IBM, Raleigh, NC (May-August, 1983) Participated in extensive external and internal design reviews of a proprietary software product. Wrote Audits and Measures document. Designed and implemented software used for manpower tracking and software metrics.
• Research Assistant, Purdue University ( 1981-1982) Worked with computer science faculty member exploring various virtual memory management systems and programming paradigms.
